My husband and I loved Florence, and we are SO excited to take the girls this summer!
Florence, Italy may be known as the cradle of the Renaissance, but it’s also a surprisingly wonderful city to explore with young kids in tow. The compact, walkable layout makes it easy for families to navigate without long transit times, and there’s something fascinating around every corner—whether it’s a grand piazza with space to run, a gelato shop with irresistible flavors, or the sight of the iconic Duomo towering overhead. Kids often love the open-air feel of the city, where street performers, fountains, and lively markets create a playful atmosphere that keeps little ones entertained while parents soak up the rich history and culture.
Beyond its famous art and architecture, Florence offers plenty of kid-friendly experiences that make it a great family destination. Families can enjoy hands-on learning at the Leonardo da Vinci Museum, climb the gentle ramps of Piazzale Michelangelo for sweeping city views, or simply spend an afternoon picnicking in the lush Boboli Gardens. Meal times are also a joy—Italian cuisine is famously child-approved, with pasta, pizza, and gelato around every corner. Florence provides the perfect mix of history, culture, and fun that lets both adults and kids feel like they’ve had an unforgettable trip together.
There are a ton of direct flights to Florence from the US. We experienced no language barrier and found the city incredibly easy to navigate. Florence is stunning in the shoulder seasons (think spring and fall) and a great alternative to Rome in the busier summer months!
