Why We Actually Prefer Disney Party Days to Visit Magic Kingdom

One Disney strategy that surprises people when I mention it?

We actually prefer going to Magic Kingdom on a party day (without party tickets).

At first, it might not make much sense. If you aren’t attending Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party or Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, Magic Kingdom closes earlier on those days. So why would I intentionally choose a day when I have less time in the park?

Because, for our family, the trade-off is absolutely worth it.

Party days aren’t a secret way to avoid every crowd at Disney. It’s still Disney, and there are still going to be people there!

But we’ve consistently noticed that the daytime crowds at Magic Kingdom can be lighter on party days. And for us, that makes the shorter park day feel much more manageable.

Instead of trying to squeeze every possible hour out of the park, we’re able to focus on the things we actually want to do. We do prioritize rides and a parade over anything else, and since we’ve been to Disney many times, we don’t feel the need to accomplish every last thing.

My girls love rides. So that’s always our priority, and on party days, I don’t even feel like we need lightning lanes most of the time to maximize what we get to. Let me assure you, I am not a “wait in line and enjoy the ambiance” sort of person. Hahaha. So if I’m saying the lines aren’t bad, you can trust that!

And because we aren’t there until 10 p.m., we’re not trying to convince ourselves that we’re still having fun when everyone is actually exhausted.

You can extend your day at Magic Kingdom with a dinner reservation, even on a party night.

There are a handful of Magic Kingdom restaurants that allow guests who aren’t attending the party to have dining reservations around or after the park’s 6 p.m. party transition.

One of my favorites is Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen.

I’ll often look for a reservation around 6 p.m., which lets us extend our evening with dinner in the park, even while the party begins outside.

Right now (September 2026) here’s the current timing/restaurant availability for party nights:

  • Last reservation for “day” guests at 5:55 PM
    • Cinderella’s Royal Table
    • Be Our Guest
  • Last reservation for “day” guests at 6:55 PM
    • Tony’s Town Square
    • Crystal Palace
    • The Plaza Restaurant
    • Skipper Canteen
    • Liberty Tree
    • Diamond Horseshoe
    • Beak & Barrel

Note: You cannot join a ride queue while you wait for your reservation – so unless you’re shopping, I would make a reservation for right around 6:00 PM, because there isn’t much else you can do while you wait.

On party nights, they establish “check points” where party guests can get their wristbands saying they are there for the party, and you will have to show your reservation to them in the MyDisney App in order to continue walking towards your dinner spot.

After you have finished your dinner, a lovely Disney employee will walk with you to the front of the park. Honestly, every time we’ve done this, I learn something new about Disney on our way to the front of the park. I look forward to that time every year!

So, while Magic Kingdom closes at 6:00 PM to non-party guests, that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re walking out of the park at 6:00 on the dot. With dinner, I still feel like we’re getting a full park day!

This is honestly one of my favorite parts.

We’ll head back to our Disney resort, and if everyone still has some energy left, a nighttime swim is pretty much the perfect way to end the day.

There’s something about letting the kids swim at the resort after a day at Magic Kingdom that feels much more relaxing than trying to squeeze another activity into the evening.

And then?

We go to bed.

Because if you’re doing multiple Disney park days in a row, those days catch up with you.

Even the most enthusiastic Disney kids—and adults—can only go so long before the early mornings, miles of walking and nonstop stimulation start to take their toll.

I’d much rather give my family a little extra sleep that night so we’re rested and ready to go for the next park day.

For some families, a party day might not make sense. If you’re only doing one day at Magic Kingdom, you’ve never been before, and you want to be there from rope drop until fireworks, then absolutely—you may want a non-party day.

But if you’re doing multiple park days in a row, I think party days are worth considering.

We’re not trying to see and do everything in one day.

We’re trying to have a really good day.

And for our family, a shorter Magic Kingdom day with lighter daytime crowds, a nice dinner, a nighttime swim and some extra sleep is often a better Disney day than squeezing every last minute out of the park.

So if you’re planning a Disney trip and see that a party is happening on one of your Magic Kingdom days, don’t automatically cross that day off your list.

Sometimes, less time in the park can actually mean getting more out of your Disney vacation.
